Riot Games is testing a new WASD movement system for League of Legends — a massive shift from the classic right-click movement the game has used for more than a decade. This guide explains how WASD controls work, who they’re designed for, and why Riot is experimenting with this optional control scheme.
What Is WASD Movement in League of Legends?
Traditionally, champions move using right-click. With the new experimental control mode, movement is performed using:
- W – Move Up
- A – Move Left
- S – Move Down
- D – Move Right
Abilities are rebound accordingly, and the camera behavior is adapted to follow movement keys more naturally.
This mode is heavily inspired by action RPGs and hero shooters, aiming to make LoL more approachable for new players.
Why Is Riot Testing WASD Controls?
Riot stated that WASD controls are meant to:
- Lower the skill gap for new players who struggle with click-to-move
- Make the game feel more instinctive and responsive
- Create a more familiar control scheme for players from other genres
- Test future champion designs that might benefit from directional movement
Players who prefer classic controls are not required to switch — the feature is optional.
How to Enable WASD Movement (When Available)
Once the feature reaches live servers or PBE:
- Open Settings (Esc)
- Go to Controls → Movement
- Enable WASD Movement Mode
- Rebind abilities and camera keys if needed
Riot may adjust the exact menu path once testing is complete.
